Join the Denton County Office of History and Culture for the Texas Talks Speaker Series! On Wednesday, November 18 at 6 PM, author and historian Katherine Sharp Landdeck will speak about the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II in the Commissioners Courtroom at the Courthouse-on-the-Square.
Women pilots were a weapon waiting to be used in World War II, and in September 1942 the United States Army Air Forces decided to give them a chance to do their part for the war effort. Training in Houston and Sweetwater, 1,102 women wore the silver wings of the Women Airforce Service Pilots flying every aircraft the USAAF had over 60 million miles before being disbanded in December 1944. After the war the women's service was forgotten until they decided to fight for recognition for their work - and for the thirty-eight women who were killed during the war - in the 1970s. In this talk Katherine Landdeck will share the story of the Women Airforce Service Pilots and their determination to fly, serve, and be remembered.
