About this Event
From the rich Renaissance sounds of Orlando de Lassus and Orlando Gibbons to the luminous contemporary voices of Caroline Shaw, Joanna Marsh and Owain Park, this programme traces a journey through reflection, prayer and transcendence.
At its heart are two extraordinary settings of Psalm 51 - Allegri’s timeless masterpiece Miserere mei, Deus, renowned for its soaring beauty, and James MacMillan’s powerful and deeply expressive modern interpretation, Miserere. Alongside these iconic works are cherished favourites including Tavener’s ethereal Funeral Ikos, Rachmaninov’s radiant Heruvimskaya pesn, and Philip Moore’s confronting Morning Prayers.
Woven together with plainsong and music inspired by ancient sacred texts, Tenebrae by Candlelight offers a moving and contemplative evening of choral music, performed by one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles and directed by Nigel Short in the warm glow of candlelight.
