What to expect
Each class session will be split between a “lecture” portion (approx 1h), and a “practical” portion (approx 1h) where small groups can get hands-on experience applying what they learned by identifying and fixing problems with help of an experienced tech. Plan for an hour of out-of-class time to review online content to introduce or round out what we’re covering in class. We’ll likely share more resources if you want to go deeper.
Classes will start with opening a machine and safely working inside a game that’s powered on. Next we’ll cover power supplies and explain playfield mechanisms. We’re going to make sure you’re able to safely do basic soldering needed to repair playfield mechanisms. We’ll teach you how to use the in-game diagnostics and how to do basic tests with a multimeter. Lectures will move on to solid state control, demystifying schematics, and explaining the lamp matrix and switch matrix. Practical exercises will get more challenging to exercise your new knowledge. In the final session, we’ll talk about the differences and commonalities across the families of machines you might encounter to help translate what you’ve learned to the widest set of games you might encounter.
