Would you like to learn how to create inclusive spaces for students who have experienced trauma?
This training will provide a solid foundation of understanding for you to create and teach yoga classes that help students heal, integrate, and come back into the body. Topics of study include:
-Neurobiology of Trauma - Explore how trauma affects the physical body and the nervous system including polyvagal theory.
-Creating a Safe Space - Learn how to use clear, empowering language and sequencing to foster a sense of choice, security and agency.
-Awareness of Racial and Generational Trauma - Understand how systemic oppression can manifest in the body.
-Ethical Considerations - Understand the scope of a yoga teacher's role and when it's appropriate to refer students to mental health professionals.
-Embodied Practices - Explore specific techniques, such as grounding and breathwork, that can help students reconnect with their bodies at their own pace.
After study and discussion, we will also dig in with a teaching lab. This enables each person to practice how to teach these elements with mentored support and constructive feedback. The heart of Trauma-Informed teachings is about sharing power and stepping into your own agency - so this isn’t a dogmatic list of “do or don’t”. Discussion will be encouraged as each person experiments with which elements of the Trauma-Informed model best suits their teaching style.
This training of “Teaching Yoga Through a Trauma-Informed Lens” is eligible for 8 hours of Yoga Alliance Continuing Education for yoga teachers. Live attendance at all meetings is necessary to receive a CEU certificate.
We suggest that you choose one of these classic texts on processing trauma to deepen your study:
Waking the Tiger by Peter Levine
My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem
The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk
Shelley Pagitt, Founder of Yoga Sanctuary and Lead Teacher Trainer is honored to guide this training along with the HYTT300 Trainers. Shelley received her certificate in Street Yoga, Trauma-Informed Yoga for Youth in 2013 and has continued studying and practicing ever since, including 300Hr Yoga Psychology and Yoga Behind Bars. This interest in trauma is rooted in her love and deep regard for all people, including two of her children that she and her husband adopted through foster care. The trauma that came into her house stirred up a passion for learning the complex layers of suffering that trauma can bring, and the possibility of growth and resilience too.
