Join us for Comedy Night at TCJFF featuring a live stand-up set from acclaimed comedian and actor Iris Bahr (Hacks, Curb Your Enthusiasm), followed by a screening of The Wedding Entertainer and post-film conversation.Parking is free and easy in the Walker West surface lot adjacent to the building.
A live comedian to start the night. A movie about the art of making people laugh. And one very complicated Jewish wedding.
Once the most sought-after badchan—a traditional Hasidic wedding comedian and master of ceremonies—in Jerusalem, Moishe Striker has fallen from grace after a battle with addiction. Desperate to raise the money to marry off his daughter, he seizes one last chance to reclaim the spotlight at the wedding of his childhood friend’s son.
There’s just one problem: Moishe has been booked alongside a younger, flashier entertainer with very different ideas about how to work a room. What follows is a hilarious and unexpectedly moving collision of generations, egos, traditions, and competing ideas about what it means to bring joy to a community.
Alive with Hebrew and Yiddish, music, dancing, comic mayhem, and the exuberant chaos of a Hasidic wedding, The Wedding Entertainer is both an irresistible comedy and a tender story of failure, forgiveness, and second chances.
Following the screening, Iris Bahr, who appears in The Wedding Entertainer, joins local filmmaker Margaret Katch for a conversation about the film, Jewish comedy, identity, and the complicated business of making people laugh.
This screening is presented in partnership with the Israel Center of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation.
