About this Event
Atelier Leyda is The Bronx Filmmakers Collective’s (TBxF) initiative in analog cinema, named after Jay Leyda, director of the 1931 film A Bronx Morning.
In October 2026, 13 independent Bronx artists took part in its first workshop, a hands-on introduction to 16mm filmmaking. Working in small crews, they learned to load and operate film cameras, work with exposure and edit in-camera. Each directed their own short film, shot and then hand-processed in the kitchen of the Andrew Freedman Home, all over a single weekend.
These are their films.
On Friday, November 20, join us for the Atelier Leyda Grand Showcase, a one-night screening of the 13 black-and-white 16mm shorts made in the workshop. Open to the general public, no filmmaking experience needed: just come and watch.
The workshop was taught by MONO NO AWARE, the Brooklyn-based analog film nonprofit, who also supervised the hand-processing. The screening is presented as part of BRONX FRAME, the Andrew Freedman Home’s series of film screenings and workshops, and the project is supported by a Community Engagement Grant from the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA).
