Tauwhiro | Walk With Us A 24hr hīkoi for wāhine, tamariki and whānau.
About this Event

For 40 years, Te Whakaruruhau has walked alongside wāhine and tamariki, providing safety, care and support to those impacted by family violence.

Now, we're calling on our tāne to walk with us.

Tauwhiro – Walk With Us is a 24-hour hīkoi held at Claudelands Park, Kirikiriroa, as part of the White Ribbon kaupapa. It is a collective stand against violence and a commitment to creating safer futures for our whānau.

This hīkoi is about more than walking.

It's about showing up. Standing together. Having the conversations that matter and recognising the role we all play in protecting and caring for our wāhine, tamariki and communities.

Real strength is care. Real brothers speak up. Our tamariki are watching.

The 24-hour hīkoi

2pm Tuesday 24 November – 2pm Wednesday 25 November 2026

For 24 continuous hours, tāne will walk around Claudelands Park, carrying the kaupapa forward throughout the day and night.

You can take on the full 24 hours individually or share the journey with your brothers in a team of two, three or four.

Every step is an expression of solidarity, responsibility and care.

How to take part

Registration is $50 per walker.

  • Solo: Commit to the full 24-hour hīkoi, with breaks for essential needs.
  • Team of two: Share the 24-hour journey between two walkers.
  • Team of three: Walk together or share the hours across your team.
  • Team of four: Bring your brothers and carry the kaupapa together.

For those registering as a team, we ask that you coordinate your walking times so at least one member of your team is walking throughout the 24 hours.

A dedicated space will be available for registered walkers to rest, recharge and recover between their walking commitments. Recovery tools, water, snacks and kai will also be available to support participants throughout the hīkoi.

A kaupapa for our whole community

Tauwhiro is more than a hīkoi. It is an opportunity for our community to come together, connect and stand collectively against violence.

Throughout the event, local services will be present to share their kaupapa, connect with whānau and raise awareness of the support available within our communities.

There will also be kai stalls and space for whānau, friends and supporters to gather, encourage our walkers and be part of the kaupapa.

Tauwhiro is a whānau-friendly, alcohol and drug-free event, and community supporters are welcome to attend free of charge.

The 24-hour hīkoi concludes at 2pm on Wednesday 25 November, with the wider event finishing at 3pm.

Hosted by Te Whakaruruhau – Waikato Women's Refuge, in collaboration with Awakiri Hau Tapu, Waahi Whaanui Trust and local community services.

Walk with us. Stand with our wāhine. Show our tamariki what care looks like.
