About this Event

Have you ever wondered how university labs and PhD research go hand-in-hand? Join us for an afternoon of exploration where we will illustrate how different areas of the Queen Mary Geography labs contribute to our understanding of the real-world environment. From flumes and sediments, through hazardous chemicals and microplastics, to 3D scanning and analysis, we can investigate how physical systems respond to changes in their surroundings.

You will hear from one of our lecturers about how PhD research at Queen Mary defined their early career path, with local Thames estuary issues at the heart of the work. Dr Tom Lawrence's analysis of estuary muds using 3D CT-scanning has allowed us to see into a world of microscopic pores that were previously hidden. Influenced by temperature, salinity, pH and contamination, these micro-pores could define how estuaries respond to climate change. The future of our tidal flats, shipping lanes, ports and coastal wetlands are at risk, but can we fight back with new geographical research?

Schedule:

3pm - meet in the Geography Common Room

3.15 - 3.45 - talk from Dr Tom Lawrence, Lecturer in Environmental Science

3.45 - 4.30 - lab tour

4.30 - 5.00 - Q&A: Applying to University
