2026 m. lapkričio 25–26 dienomis Lietuvos Respublikos Seime (III rūmai), Konferencijų salėje, vyks tarptautinė mokslinė konferencija „Neginkluotas pasipriešinimas totalitariniams režimams: kova už tautines ir religijos laisves bei žmogaus teises (** a. antroji pusė – XXI a. pirmieji dešimtmečiai)“, skirta Lietuvos Helsinkio grupės 50-ties metų įkūrimo jubiliejui paminėti.

___________
On November 25–26, 2026, the international scientific conference Nonviolent Resistance to Totalitarian Regimes: The Struggle for National and Religious Freedoms and Human Rights (Second Half of the 20th Century – First Decades of the 21st Century) will take place in the Conference Hall of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. The conference will mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lithuanian Helsinki Group. It is organised by the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania in cooperation with the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania. The patron of the conference is the Commission for the Cause of Freedom and the National Historical Memory of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.
During the two-day conference, scholars from Lithuania and eleven other countries – Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine – will give presentations addressing theoretical and practical aspects of nonviolent resistance. Tomas Venclova, Professor at Yale University and one of the founding members of the Lithuanian Helsinki Group, will share his recollections and insights.
The concept behind the conference is to connect historical research on dissent with contemporary human rights issues. The presentations will examine the development of nonviolent resistance to totalitarian regimes, the activities of human rights defenders, religious communities, diasporas and other civic initiatives, the significance of international solidarity, and the place of these experiences in historical memory. The historical research will be complemented by discussions on the protection of human rights, civil resistance and the defence of freedoms in the context of present-day authoritarianism, occupation and war.
During the conference, an exhibition prepared by museum staff from the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania, Documents of Truth. The Lithuanian Helsinki Group – a Challenge to the Soviet System, will be on display. The exhibition tells the story of how five members of the Lithuanian Helsinki Group, risking their freedom, chose to bear public witness to the truth about human rights violations in Soviet-occupied Lithuania. Their documents broke through the Iron Curtain, reached the wider world, and became an important testimony to civic courage and resistance to injustice.
