About this Event
Summer & Other Stories follows protagonist Ruby through a series of vignettes that map her teen escape from the Midwest to early eighties San Francisco, and then, coincidentally back to Michigan in mid-life—a tour that spans the AIDS crisis at its peak on the west coast to the malaise of motherhood and a post-Vietnam brand of emotional abandonment. It is a dark portrait of the nature of dreams, discontent, and the benumbing effects of war.
Tamara Skidmore graduated Western Michigan University’s MFA Creative Writing Program, 1998. She has published stories in Alaska Quarterly Review, and SFSU Review, (currently Fourteen Hills: The SFSU Review), taught composition at Western Michigan University, and has worked for the Kalamazoo Public Library. She is married to George Kuttner, writer and photographer, with whom she shares two beautiful kids. Summer & Other Stories is her first published collection.

Mary Hannah Terzino is a Midwestern fiction and non-fiction writer whose work has been published in The Forge Literary Magazine, Pithead Chapel, MacQueen’s Quarterly, Hypertext Review, and elsewhere. Her story “Blank Slate” won first prize in Fiction Factory’s 2021 flash fiction contest, and “Saving the Turtles” was nominated for the Best Small Fictions 2024 anthology. Q: Do I need to register?
A: Please do if at all possible! Use the registration button above. Registering ahead of time helps us with scheduling, book ordering, and other decisions that are made several weeks prior to the event. The more info we have ahead of time, the better.
With a registered list, we can also easily and directly communicate event updates such as postponements or cancellations.
If you are unable to sign up online, please call or visit the bookstore and register with a bookseller.
Walk-ins are always welcome, but seating decisions are made based on registered attendance and seating priority is given to registered attendees first.
Q: Are in store events free?
A: Yes, Magers & Quinn events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Q: Are masks required?
A: Masks are not required to browse in the store or at most events. Some events may come with a request for masking for the health and safety of the author. If so it will be noted here whenever possible.
