Suffragettes & Granny Rawle
Join Mick for a fascinating talk exploring the Suffragette movement and the remarkable life of his own ‘Granny’, Mary Ann Rawle .
Beginning with a brief history of voting rights for men and women, Mick explores the campaign for women’s suffrage and the wider fight for women’s rights in the early 20th century. He then shares the story of Mary Ann Rawle, a staunch Socialist and passionate campaigner who lived in the Manchester area until her early 30s before moving to Grantham in 1910.
Mary Ann went on to become a prominent citizen and campaigner in Grantham, dedicating herself to improving the lives of others. She served on committees for organisations including the Co-op and the local Blind Society, helped establish the Grantham branch of the Old Age Pensioners Association, and became its first Chairman.
Taking place in 2026, 98 years after women gained the right to vote on the same terms as men , this talk will also help launch a year of activity at Grantham Museum leading towards the 2028 centenary of equal voting rights for women . As part of HerVote100 , a national initiative celebrating the 100th anniversary of the full franchise for all women in the UK, we will explore, celebrate and share the stories of the women who fought for equality and democracy—and inspire future generations to continue that legacy.
Discover the story of a remarkable Grantham woman, celebrate the legacy of the Suffragette movement, and join us as we begin the journey towards HerVote100 in 2028 .
Speaker bio: Formerly known as Quentin, Mick now lives in Melton Mowbray and has been a keen Family Historian since the early 1980s and successfully ran his own business as a professional Genealogist for 20 years and although he doesn’t do professional research anymore, he is continuing to index many documents for his local Record Office. He was the Projects Co-ordinator for the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society for a number of years and later became its Honorary President. He has given about 300 Family and Local History talks throughout the East Midlands over the last 25 years but has cut back on travelling in the evenings and will only do the odd one now.
