Talk: Spinning and Weaving in Myth and Fairy-Tales

By Dr. Carey Fleiner of the University of Winchester
This talk looks at how spinning and weaving have been embedded in the folklore, myth, and fairy-tales in western Europe from the times of the Greeks and Romans through to the Middle Ages.
Weavers as storytellers! Spinners as good wives and mothers! Flax spun onto gold! These tales include the story of Penelope and her loom, the three spinning Fates of Rome and the Valkyries, and the moral lessons of Frau Holle: clever women whose wool and flax spinning and weaving gave them voices and agency in an otherwise man’s world.
All tickets must be booked in advance. In aid of Living Weaving Heritage at the Mill
Please note that tea and coffee will be available for donation. Doors open at 6.30 pm.
