To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Edith Smith’s birth, this talk explores the fascinating and remarkable life of one of Britain’s pioneering women police officers.
Beginning with Edith’s origins in northwest England, the talk follows her journey to Grantham, where she was appointed as a Women Police Constable (WPC) in 1915. Against the backdrop of the Great War, Edith took on a vital role in supporting her community and became an important figure in the development of women’s policing.
The talk explores her career, her work during the Great War, and the circumstances surrounding her tragic death in 1923, providing an insight into the life and legacy of a remarkable woman who helped pave the way for women in policing.
Speaker bio: Dr John Manterfield researched the history of Grantham in the period 1535-1835 for his doctoral thesis at Exeter University. He is the author of three books on 17th Century Grantham and has written several articles. He is also chair of the Grantham Civic Society.
