Tales from the Museum 2026A Community Short Story Contest

The Challenge
Write an original short story or poem inspired by a real historical artifact from the museum’s collection. The artifact may appear directly in the story or simply inspire the setting, plot, or characters. All entries should have a spooky or mysterious theme in the spirit of Halloween.
Rules
· Original, unpublished fiction only.
· Must feature or be inspired by an artifact from the Museum
· 750 words or less (shorter is better).
· Open to writers of all ages. Categories will be Youth (up to 10 Years old), Teen (11-18), and Adult (19+)
· Typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. (about 4 pages maximum)
· Include title, writer’s name and age group (youth, teen or adult) and list the artifact that inspired the story

Deadline for Entries - October 16th, As the clock strikes midnight.
Judging Criteria
A panel of 3 judges will select winners in each category, evaluating entries based on creativity and writing quality.
Halloween Awards Event
A special Tales from the Museum reading event will be held at 6pm, on Thursday, October 29th at the Museum (18 North 4th Ave, Sturgeon Bay). Winners will be announced and selected stories will be performed by local actors. The event will be divided into two blocks: the earlier one for youth and teens and the later one for adults. Costumes will be encouraged and there will be tricks and treats!
