Claude Debussy's "Twenty-Four Préludes" is widely regarded as a landmark of twentieth-century piano literature, has become one of Taka Kigawa’s signature works through performances around the world.
Kigawa has earned particular acclaim for his interpretations of Debussy. The New York Times praised his “thoughtful, poetic accounts,” noting that “Mr. Kigawa’s Debussy is carefully shaded and texturally transparent. He knows how to make this music sparkle.” La Nación hailed him as “a phenomenal virtuoso,” praising “the perfection of hues, articulations and rhythms” in this repertoire.
The November 7 recital will be Kigawa’s final performance at Greenwich House Music School’s current Barrow Street location, as the school prepares to move to a new home. Following his recent sold-out performance of the complete Préludes at (le) Poisson Rouge, he offers another opportunity to experience the cycle in its entirety—this time in the intimate setting of the school’s historic Greenwich Village home, which has more than 120 years of history.
A graduate of The Juilliard School and a Steinway Artist, Kigawa has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Library of Congress, and major venues in Paris, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, and Tokyo. He has collaborated with distinguished artists including Pierre Boulez, Unsuk Chin, Myung-Whun Chung, Jonathan Nott, and Yusef Lateef.
For Kigawa, Debussy’s Préludes represent a lifelong artistic journey—one that reveals ever-changing shades of color, atmosphere, and mystery with each performance.
