Under the direction of Music Director Robert Carter Austin, Symphony Arlington brings together professional musicians from across North Texas for an evening that journeys from the vibrant rhythms of Mexico to the lyricism of Bohemia and the extraordinary orchestral world of Sergei Rachmaninoff.
The evening opens with Aaron Copland’s colorful El Salón México, inspired by the composer’s visits to Mexico and filled with infectious rhythms, folk melodies, and unmistakable orchestral energy.
Cellist Iona Batchelder then joins Symphony Arlington for Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, one of the most celebrated works in the entire cello repertoire. Sweeping, passionate, and deeply expressive, the concerto moves from moments of heroic grandeur to extraordinary intimacy, placing the cello at the heart of Dvořák’s richly Romantic orchestral sound.
The concert culminates with Symphonic Dances, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s spectacular final orchestral composition. Written in America near the end of his life, the work combineshaunting melodies, explosive rhythms, brilliant orchestration, and echoes of the composer’s Russian past in a breathtaking showcase for the full orchestra.
