Swing Asheville Live! With Blue Nickels
Banks Avenue Bar
32 Banks Ave #101, Asheville, NC 28801
The Blue Nickels jazz band plays a mix of "traditional jazz", and danceable selections from 1920s and 30s and and 40s. The band's sensibilities reflect a love for moderate tempo, melodic, yet groovy energies. The horns tend towards counterpoint and harmonic partnership, as opposed to a "hot" or "in your face" aesthetics.
Based in Asheville, the band is led by Ben Lieb, who was a founding member of a long-time Asheville favorite dance band the Low-Down Sires. He also played with Blue Marmalade, a band with some members of the Sires that formed briefly after the pandemic. Ben has a long history of involvement with Swing Asheville, and has taught Lindy Hop and Balboa off and on over the last 20 years. His longest continuous stint was with his former dance partner Eva Millwood where they taught together every Tuesday for 4 years. He is an occasional DJ for dances, former president of Swing Asheville, and used to maintain the Swing Asheville website.
Joining Ben will be Bob Snope, Albi Podrizki, and Walt Kross.
