About this Event

Event overview

Draft chapters for the South West Scotland Archaeological Research Framework (SWSARF) project are currently being prepared and the first drafts are now available on the ScARF website for users to review and comment on. This event will offer you the chance to be involved in the creation and consultation of this highly anticipated framework.

We will explore the early medieval draft chapter and the development of the framework through short talks and group discussions. We are keen to hear feedback, suggestions and new perspectives from the people who live and work in the region.

The early medieval draft chapter will soon be made available.

Please note this is an in-person only event.

Tea and coffee will be provided. The full schedule will be circulated ahead of the event.

About SWSARF

The South West Scotland Archaeological Research Framework is a three-year project to develop and disseminate a regional research framework for North, East and South Ayrshire as well as Dumfries and Galloway.

The South West is home to a vast array of significant archaeological sites, including some of the earliest evidence of human occupation in Scotland at Starr and Smittons, a Neolithic village at Dreghorn, the world-famous medieval priory at Whithorn and the towering remains of the industrial past at the Barony A Frame in East Ayrshire. SWSARF will not only review what archaeologists know about the region’s complex past but explore questions still to be answered.

The project officially started in June 2024 and is coordinated by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, in partnership with Rathmell Archaeology Ltd and the local authority archaeologists at West of Scotland Archaeology Service (WoSAS) and Dumfries and Galloway Council. SWSARF is funded by Historic Environment Scotland.
