1965
THE BEATLES – ‘RUBBER SOUL’
In 1965 the Beatles gave up their punishing live schedule to concentrate on the recording studio and the result of this was their most adventurous and accomplished album to date.
When released, Mono was the preferred audio format, so time was spent perfecting a Mono mix while Stereo was an afterthought often with a simple separation of vocals in the right channel and music in the left. Not to mention what the Americans did to the album sound and track listing.
For 60 years, for most people, the Mono mix has been the preferred way to listen to ‘Rubber Soul’ but this month we finally received a new “proper” Stereo mix and, more remarkably, an immersive spacial, surround sound mix in Dolby Atmos thanks to producer Giles Martin and the audio separation techniques created by Peter Jackson.
Come and listen to ‘Rubber Soul’ as you’ve never experienced it before.
DAVID BOWIE – ‘THE SHEL TALMY RECORDINGS’
For a couple of years, a young English musician by the name of Davie Jones had been playing in bands such as The King Bees, The Manish Boys and The Lower Third, releasing a few singles with zero success however two of the singles were recorded by American producer Shel Talmy who’d had success with The Who and The Kinks.
Shel Talmy recorded 18 tracks in total during these sessions which, until now, have remained unheard and unreleased. The Shel Talmy Recordings offer an exceptional look at the formative years of David Jones as a young London Mod before changing his name to David Bowie, to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees, and the release of his first solo, self-titled album in 1967.
In a first for Surrounded By Sound we present The Shel Talmy Recordings in glorious Mono.
