This Month’s Topic:

Supporting Individuals With Brain Injury At OBIA

This presentation, in celebration of Social Work Month, will explore the vital role of social workers in brain injury services. I will provide an overview of the Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA), the programs we offer, and how social workers contribute to supporting individuals and families navigating life after brain injury.

Attendees can expect to learn about the role of social work, current gaps and challenges within the system, and how advocacy, client-centered practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration create meaningful impact. The presentation will also highlight opportunities for social workers to get involved in brain injury services and expand their professional practice into this specialized field.

Guest Speaker: Lekshmi Jayakrishnan

Lekshmi is a Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Waterloo. They began their career as a Social Service Worker after completing their diploma at Niagara College, initially working in mental health and housing support.

For the past six years, Lekshmi has specialized in the field of acquired brain injury, supporting individuals and families as they navigate complex systems of care, rehabilitation, and community reintegration. Lekshmi's work focuses on advocacy, client-centered practice, and improving access to services for survivors of brain injury.

Lekshmi is currently completing their Master of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University and am doing their placement at Early Psychosis Intervention program in the Niagara Region, where they continue to strengthen my clinical skills and commitment to community-based practice.
