The world’s largest humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Sudan, posing an existential challenge to global norms and security.For over 1,000 days, the world has stood by as the warring parties to the conflict there have carried out systematic mass atrocities with impunity.And yet, the magnitude of these crimes has failed to generate sustained global attention, let alone decisive action to stop them.
Civilian protection missions and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine have been effectively sidelined, and public trust in the UN Security Council has deteriorated to historic lows.
In Darfur, the world has now failed to prevent genocide twice within a single generation. On October 26, 2025, after an 18-month siege, the Rapid Support Forces stormed the city of El Fasher in North Darfur and carried out massacres and other violent crimes against a starving, defenseless population. Tens of thousands were killed.
How did we get here? How do we build confidence in atrocity response mechanisms moving forward? What role can Canada play?
In response to this urgent and unjustly ignored crisis, the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights and Massey College will convene a panel of leading experts on Sudan, international law, atrocity prevention, and humanitarian assistance to reflect together on these questions and formulate realistic actions that can protect civilians, deliver lifesaving humanitarian aid, and help end the war still ravaging Sudan.
The event will bring together key policymakers, diplomats, government representatives, and Sudanese diaspora community members.
The event is free and open to all. Advance registration is required.

La plus grande crise humanitaire au monde se déroule actuellement au Soudan, posant un défi existentiel aux normes et à la sécurité internationales.
Depuis plus de 1 000 jours, le monde est resté spectateur tandis que les parties belligérantes au conflit commettent systématiquement des atrocités de masse en toute impunité.
Et pourtant, la gravité de ces crimes n’a pas généré l’attention internationale soutenue qu’elle exige, encore moins des mesures concrètes pour les arrêter.
Les missions de protection des civils et la doctrine de la responsabilité de protéger (R2P) ont été mises à l’écart, et la confiance du public envers le Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies s’est effondrée à des niveaux sans précédent.
Au Darfour, la communauté internationale a échoué, pour la deuxième fois en une génération, à empêcher un génocide. Le 26 octobre 2025, après dix-huit mois de siège, les Forces de soutien rapide ont envahi El Fasher, au Darfour-Nord, massacrant et attaquant une population affamée et sans défense. Des dizaines de milliers de civils ont péri.
Comment en sommes-nous arrivés là ? Comment reconstruire la crédibilité des mécanismes de prévention et de réponse aux atrocités? Quel rôle le Canada peut-il jouer ?
Pour répondre à cette crise urgente et trop longtemps ignorée, le Centre Raoul Wallenberg pour les droits de la personne (CRWDP) et le Collège Massey réuniront un panel d’experts de premier plan sur le Soudan, le droit international, la prévention des atrocités et l’aide humanitaire. Ensemble, ils réfléchiront à ces enjeux et proposeront des actions concrètes pour protéger les civils, fournir une aide humanitaire vitale et contribuer à mettre fin à la guerre qui ravage encore le Soudan.
