On 3/30/2026, my whole world was turned upside down during an annual mammogram .
On 4/8/26, I was diagnosed with stage 1b Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
On 5/27/26, I underwent a double mastectomy and on 7/8/26, I was told I had to have chemotherapy due to an unexpected positive lymph node. I could handle the surgeries but to hear I needed chemo rocked me to my core.
How do you say “yes” to something that you know will make you feel sick when all this time you have not felt sick at all?
On 7/29/26, I had my first infusion and on 9/30/26, I expect to have my last. But the journey won’t stop there. Radiation next, more surgeries and years of medications to help stop a reoccurrence.
My boys and I are here with no local family around. I had to return to work shortly after my surgery as I had run out of FMLA. I returned with ADA accommodations but because of the ADA accommodations, I have lost income as I am unable to work any OT. Before diagnosis, I would work about 22 hours of OT a week.
This OT was what I needed to support my boys and the household.
Although I am thankful the ADA accommodations are in place to support me remaining healthy through chemo, I have learned having cancer is expensive.
I am also learning to accept support and for that I am thankful for this opportunity with your community!
