About this Event
California has one of the highest state rates of incarceration within a country with the highest rate of incarceration in the world. Those who were given life sentences with or without the possibility of parole and are now able to leave Pr*son because of important legal reform are often returning home after 15 to as much as 55 years inside. When individuals are finally released from long Pr*son stays, they then face an economy in Los Angeles County where even those without a criminal background struggle to be able to afford a home or pay all of their bills. Particularly for those who were incarcerated for upwards of 15 years, there are many basic skills to acquire and steps to take to be able to begin the process of finding work and a place to live. Life is unrecognizable.
Mass Liberation works to provide for all of the needs that someone has within the first years after coming home; everything from driving lessons, benefits enrollment, coaching, lifeskills, and technology to relationship counseling and clothing for job interviews. We also provide short and long-term housing opportunities.
The Sunday Salons are an opportunity to hear directly from the people experiencing a return from long-term incarceration about what they've experienced and what is being done that helps. You'll learn more about California's prisons and about how the community can help to bring people home with grace and love.
