Discover the extraordinary life of poet, philosopher and music visionary Sun Ra. With his ever-evolving collective, the Sun Ra Arkestra, he self-produced more than 200 albums, stretching the boundaries of jazz. Please join us for the kickoff event for this year's Sun Ra Day Festival on Wednesday, May 21st at 8 pm for a special screening of the recently released documentary Sun Ra: Do The Impossible. As part of a three day extravaganza honoring Sun Ra's 112th "arrival day" here in the Magic City, the Sidewalk showing will be followed by a special presentation of the legendary 1959 film The Cry of Jazz at the Birmingham Museum of Art on May 21st (and featuring a panel discussion with members of the Arkestra led by local music historian Burgin Mathews and our very own Jessica Chriesman!), followed by an epic performance by the band at Saturn on May 22nd to officially celebrate Sun Ra Day. It's going to be an amazing week of film and music, with all proceeds from the event here going to funding the cinema's operations, so we hope everyone will come out to help support both us and Sun Ra's legacy!!!
