Join Wellington artist Jo Kreyl and discover a different approach to botanical painting using just one colour: ultramarine blue. Working on a wet, painted surface, you’ll learn how to lift away paint to reveal highlights, then build in shadows to create depth, form and beautiful botanical details. This technique offers a fresh way to explore light and dark, allowing flowers and leaves to emerge from the blue in a striking, tonal study. Your finished painting can be enjoyed as a work of art in its own right or used as an underpainting for further layers of colour and detail you can add later at home.
All materials are provided, and no previous painting experience is necessary. This event is kindly sponsored by Gordon Harris Wellington.
Please note: This event requires a minimum of 4 bookings to go ahead. If fewer than 4 people register, the event will be cancelled and all fees paid will be fully refunded.
This workshop is part of the Friends of the Wellington Botanic Garden’s Artist in Residence programme at Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā. During the residency, Jo will be based in the Treehouse Visitors Centre on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Come on by to see her at work and have a chat.
