Richard Braine’s exhibition focuses on 26 photographs taken between 1964 and 1976 in and around Ladbroke Grove. Highlights include a boy on a wall watching the Westway being built in Tavistock Crescent in 1964, Rachmanism graffiti on Ledbury Road in 1969, three boys and a pony under the Westway in 1973, and the Roots Food & Drink stall at the carnival in 1976.
Bio:
Richard Braine (1941-2016) was a photographer whose life and work were deeply intertwined with the extraordinary cultural shifts of his time. From his post-war youth on the South Coast of England to his immersion in the countercultural movements in London from the 1960s to the early 21st century, his experiences shaped his artistic vision.
At the age of 17, Braine made the pivotal move to London, a city that would become a lifelong source of inspiration. Living in West London through the 1960s and beyond, the rapidly evolving cultural landscape of the time became the subject of some of his greatest pictures. He captured transformative moments of the era, including the early Notting Hill Carnival, which burst on to the scene as a vibrant counterpoint to the prevailing austerity of that time. His photographs of successive youth movements like the Mods and Rockers, and later the Punks, serve as powerful records of creative expression and rebellion against the political and social tensions of the period.
