ARTIST STATEMENT: NATALIE JACKSON
I have been photographing jazz musicians for 25 years. This journey began in an Atlanta jazz club on Peachtree Street and eventually led me to document the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. That experience transformed the way I saw and interpreted my favorite subjects. Hearing musicians improvise and create in the moment inspired me to move beyond traditional portraiture and approach their performances through a more abstract lens. I began dissecting my photographs—layering, collaging, and digitally painting the images—to create a visual language that reflects the energy, spontaneity, and improvisational spirit of jazz itself.
