The historic Newtown neighborhood in North Montgomery is gathering for a unified community stand regarding the proposed heavy Construction and Demolition (C&D) industrial waste facility at 1401 N. Decatur Street. A private out-of-town waste corporation has submitted plans to bring an intensive, high-volume regional processing and transfer hub to a 13-acre parcel directly bordering family residential homes [OUR TEAM - AMT – Engineers, Architects, Planners]. This property sits a mere 19 feet from immediate residential backyards and rests squarely within a low-lying FEMA flood hazard area that drains directly into the Alabama River.Operating a multi-million dollar, heavy industrial waste operation at this specific site introduces immediate physical burdens to our historic 190-year-old neighborhood, including the constant movement of hundreds of heavy diesel dump trucks, extreme local traffic congestion, heavy machine noise, and massive clouds of industrial dust blowing straight into our yards and streets. Newtown has stood as a proud sanctuary of Black resilience for nearly two centuries, and our families refuse to let our neighborhood be treated as an open-air dumping ground for private our children, and we are showing up together to protect our environment, our air, and our families' quality of life. We need every single resident, family member, neighbor, and local supporter in the room to stand as one voice and demand that this project be stopped permanently.
