Build a Business That Can Thrive Without You
About this Event

You Are Going to Leave Your Business Someday.

The question is how? Will you pass it down to your children? Will an employee or partner eventually take it over? Will you sell it? Did you even know you could sell it? Or have you built a business that works because you are still the person holding everything together? Most business owners spend years thinking about how to grow. More customers. More employees. More revenue, but very few stop and ask:

What am I actually building?

If you stepped away tomorrow, would you leave behind a functioning business? Or would you leave behind a company that still needs you to make the decisions, maintain the relationships, solve the problems, drive the sales, and keep everything moving? Because someday, that difference matters. A lot. Stop Being the Bottleneck is a three-hour, hands-on workshop designed to help established business owners look at their company differently. Not just as the business they're running today, but as an asset they're building for tomorrow.

What Do You Want Your Business to Become?

Maybe you want to run your company for another 15 years. Maybe you'd love to pass it down to your children. Maybe you want key employees to eventually take over. Maybe you assume you'll sell someday. Maybe you've never considered that someone might actually buy your business. You don't need to know the answer yet, but you should be building a company that gives you the choice. That's the purpose of this workshop. Business Coach Shannon Ford and Business Broker Doug Van Liew are bringing together two sides of a conversation business owners should be having long before they're ready to exit:

How do you build a business that can operate without depending on you?

And...

How do the decisions you're making today affect what that business could eventually be worth to someone else?

Meet Your Workshop Leaders
Shannon Ford
Business Coach & Strategist | Coaching With Shannon

Shannon works with established business owners who have built successful companies but have reached a frustrating point: The business has grown, but everything still seems to come back to them. Questions need their answers. Decisions need their approval. Sales depend on their relationships. Employees rely on what they know. Problems eventually land on their desk. And too much of how the company operates still lives inside the owner's head. Shannon helps owners identify where they've become the system and build the structure, processes, accountability and leadership their company needs to operate consistently without requiring them to be involved in everything. During the workshop, Shannon will take you inside the critical systems of your own business so you can identify where you're creating bottlenecks, where the company is overly dependent on you and what needs to change. Because if your goal is eventually to step away, pass the company on or sell it, you first have to build a business that can function without you.

Doug Van Liew
Business Broker | Hampton Roads

Doug Van Liew is a Hampton Roads-based Business Broker who specializes in helping Main Street business owners confidently prepare for, navigate and complete the sale of their businesses. And Doug understands the process from a perspective many brokers don't have: He's been the business owner. Doug has personally bought and sold companies, giving him firsthand understanding that selling a business isn't simply a financial transaction. For an owner who has spent years building something, it's personal. Doug primarily works with service-based and locally owned businesses, including home services, accounting firms, salons and other owner-operated companies throughout Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and the greater Hampton Roads area. Before focusing on business brokerage, Doug built a strong foundation in real estate, operations and small-business ownership. That background allows him to look beyond the numbers and evaluate what actually drives value in a business, including systems, people, cash flow stability and transition readiness. Doug also frequently works with owners who are early in the exit-planning process and may be years away from selling. His focus is on helping them understand valuation drivers, common pitfalls and realistic expectations so they can make better decisions before they're ready to go to market.During the workshop, Doug will help answer questions many business owners have never seriously considered: Can my business actually be sold? What makes someone want to buy a business? What can make a business difficult to sell? How does the owner's involvement affect the business? What should I be thinking about now if I may want to sell years from now? What if I want my children or someone inside the company to take over instead? Doug's mission is simple: help business owners protect what they've built and eventually transition on their own terms, with clarity, confidence and trust.

If Someone Offered to Buy Your Business Tomorrow...
What exactly would they be buying?

Your customer list?

Your equipment?

Your employees?

Your reputation?

Your cash flow?

Your processes?

Your relationships?

Or would they really be buying you?

That's a question many business owners don't think about until much too late.

A potential buyer isn't simply looking at what your company does.

They're also looking at whether the company can continue doing it after you leave.

And even if you never sell, the same things that can make a business more transferable can also make it a much better business to own today.

This Isn't Just an Exit-Planning Workshop

You don't need to be retiring.

You don't need to have your business listed for sale.

You don't even need to know what your eventual exit looks like.

This workshop is about building the business with the end in mind.

A company that's less dependent on its owner gives that owner more choices.

You may eventually:

Keep it.

Pass it to your children.

Develop leadership to run it.

Sell it to an employee.

Sell it to another business owner or outside buyer.

The point isn't deciding today.

The point is building something worth having those choices about.

What We'll Work On

This is not three hours of motivational business talk. And it's not three hours of listening to someone tell you how to sell your company. You're going to work on your actual business. Shannon will guide you through the systems and areas of owner dependence that can prevent a company from operating without you. Doug will show you how many of those same issues look from the perspective of business value, transition readiness and a future buyer. Together, we'll help you start answering questions like: Where am I still the bottleneck? What knowledge or relationships depend too heavily on me? Could my employees operate effectively without my constant involvement? Are my processes repeatable, or are they mostly in my head? What would need to change if someone else had to run this company? What could make my business more valuable and transferable? What should I start fixing now instead of waiting until I'm ready to leave? You'll leave with a clearer picture of where your business stands today and what deserves your attention next.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for established business owners, particularly service-business owners who have moved beyond startup mode. It's especially valuable if:

Your business has employees or a growing team.

You've been in business for several years.

The company is successful, but you're still involved in too many daily decisions.

You'd like the business to function more independently from you.

You think you may eventually sell the company but have no idea what that actually looks like.

You want to pass the business to your children or another person someday.

You've wondered whether your business even has value to a buyer.

You're simply ready to start building a company that gives you more choices about your future.

What You'll Leave With

You'll leave with a better understanding of:

Where your business still depends too heavily on you

Which areas of the company need stronger systems

What makes a company easier or harder to transfer

What buyers actually look at when evaluating a business

How today's operational decisions can affect tomorrow's options

What you should begin working on now

And perhaps most importantly:

You'll start thinking about your business as an asset you're building, not simply a job you're running.
