Abhay Sopori is the foremost practitioner and tradition bearer of the santoor within the Sopori style today. Abhay, son of “The Saint of Santoor” Pandit Bhajan Sopori, belongs to the Kashmiri Sufiana Gharana, a long musical tradition where the santoor has been played for six generations. Abhay Sopori received his early training from his father and grandfather Shamboo Nath Sopori and has become known for both deepening and continuing his heritage and at the same time developing it, including by uniting the classical North Indian santoor tradition with Kashmiri folk music and modern musical expressions and developing Sufi music and Kashmiri folk music in an orchestral context. Among other things, Sopori, who is also a composer and conductor, founded The Sufi Music Ensemble and collaborated with The Bavarian State Orchestra of Germany. Abhay Sopori has appeared on countless major stages in India and internationally and has written music for films, documentaries and other productions. His work has been recognized with several awards, including the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar and The Gandhi Global Peace Award.
