Learn the basics of traditional hand embroidery in this beginner-friendly workshop, where participants will create a charming postcard scene
About this Event

Join us for Stitch a Postcard Scenery, a hands-on hand embroidery workshop where participants will learn a traditional counted stitch technique while creating a small scenic textile piece inspired by postcard imagery. This beginner-friendly class introduces several counted stitches and explores how fabric tension and thread choice affect the quality and finish of the final work. The instructor will provide live, hands-on demonstrations throughout the session, along with guidance on materials, tools, and technique, including how this style of embroidery connects to other fibre art traditions and its historical background.

This is a sign-up workshop with a minimum of three hours of instruction time. Participants will work at tables with good lighting provided, as detailed handwork requires clear visibility. Ball-ended needles will be used for safety, along with sharp scissors handled with care. Some participants may find threading the needles challenging, so magnifying glasses are recommended, though assistance will be available as needed.

All materials are provided.

About your instructor:    Darcy L. Hoover is an Edmonton based fibre artist who works predominantly in hand embroidery.  Darcy has training from the Royal School of Needlework in London, UK. She achieved a Certificate in Technical Hand Embroidery with merit in 2024. Darcy is currently working on the follow-up Diploma in Technical Hand Embroidery with an expected completion date in early 2027. These two achievements will demonstrate Darcy's proficiency in seven traditional embroidery techniques: crewelwork, blackwork, silk shading, goldwork, whitework, applique, and canvaswork.

Registration: This workshop offers both advance registration and same-day registration to accommodate farmers market visitors. Half of the available spots are held for same-day registration on a first come, first served basis starting at 10am at the workshop site.

This programming is brought to you by Alberta Craft Gallery + Shop in partnership with the Edmonton Downtown Business Association. Each week from May 16 – October 10, Alberta Craft will be hosting hands-on craft workshops and programming at the 104th Street Famers Market from 10:30 am – 2 pm. Programming includes a mix of drop-in sessions and pre-registered workshops.
