DFW Dental Connections is welcoming Duane “Tink” Tinker—often known in dentistry as “The ToothCop”—is the founder/CEO and chief compliance consultant behind Dental Compliance Specialists, based in the DFW area. His background is unusual for a dental speaker: before becoming a consultant, he worked in law enforcement and served as an investigator for the Texas Dental Board. Why does his background matter?
Tink spent about 10 years in law enforcement, including roughly two years investigating dentists for the Texas Dental Board. He also has extensive emergency-medical experience. He eventually moved from investigating compliance problems to helping dental practices prevent them.
His work covers much more than basic OSHA training. He works with practices on OSHA and infection control, HIPAA, Dental Board rules, DEA/controlled-substance compliance, radiation safety, sedation and emergency preparedness, documentation and chart audits, billing/coding, Medicaid/OIG compliance, government audits and investigations, and risk management. He has also assisted attorneys and dental practices when serious regulatory or patient-safety issues arise.
One thing I think makes him particularly relevant to dental office managers and leaders is that his material is very practical. His company approach in helping practices train, identify problems, fix them, and maintain compliance, rather than simply handing an office a binder of policies.
