About this Event
This training is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to Eye Movement
Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Over the course of three hours, we
will delve into the fundamental aspects of EMDR, including its history, the Adaptive
Information Processing (AIP) model, research findings, and the eight phases of the
EMDR therapy model. Through a combination of experiential group exercises, lecture,
and live demonstrations, practitioners will gain valuable insights into this powerful therapeutic approach.
3 CEs available to NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, NYS Licensed Psychologists and NYS Licensed Psychoanalysts provided by Hudson Valley Professional Development, LLC upon successful completion of training.
Objectives:
1. Understanding EMDR Therapy:
- Gain a foundational understanding of what EMDR therapy is and its applications in the field of mental health.
- Explore the theoretical underpinnings of EMDR, including the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model.
2. Historical Context:
- Trace the development and evolution of EMDR therapy.
- Understand the contributions of Francine Shapiro and the emergence of EMDR as a recognized therapeutic modality.
3. Research and Evidence:
- Examine the empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of EMDR therapy.
- Discuss key research findings and their implications for clinical practice.
4. The Eight Phases of EMDR:
- Explore the eight phases of the EMDR therapy model in detail, including assessment, desensitization, and reprocessing phases.
- Understand how these phases work together to facilitate trauma resolution and symptom relief.
5. Experiential Learning:
- Engage in group exercises to experience some of the core EMDR techniques.
6. Safe-Enough Place Exercise:
- Learn and group practice of the "safe-enough place" exercise, a foundational component of EMDR therapy for emotional regulation and resource building.
7. Target Assessment:
- Gain an understanding of how to identify and assess target memories or issues suitable for EMDR therapy.
In accordance with the NY State Department of Education guidelines, in order to receive continuing education contact hours, a participant needs to be present for the duration of the workshop/training. Therefore, participants who arrive late or leave the event early will not be granted a certificate of completion.

William M. Zangwill, Ph.D. is a highly-regarded EMDR trainer, who worked extensively with Dr. Francine Shapiro, the originator of EMDR. A preeminent EMDRIA-certified EMDR Trainer, he has led trainings across the US, as well as in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. During his 20+ years as an EMDR trainer, he has written extensively on EMDR and presented at several national conferences, most recently at the EMDRIA 2023 Conference.. He specializes in combining EMDR and meditation and using EMDR with Schema Therapy. Currently, he practices in Manhattan, where he specializes in the treatment of PTSD and sexual, marital, and family problems.
Elizabeth Armstrong, LCSW-R is an EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Trainer and Consultant, Certified Schema Therapist, and Certified Meditation Teacher. She received her training at Columbia University and The National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP), and is the founder and clinical director of a Manhattan-based group practice that specializes in treating adults with Complex Trauma.
Ms. Armstrong integrates evidence-based modalities including Schema Therapy, EMDR, IFS, and Trial-Based Cognitive Therapy (TBCT) to help her clients attain deep healing and foster lasting positive changes in their lives. She has presented and trained at workshops and conferences worldwide, including The Schema Therapy Conference (ISST) in Copenhagen, Parlay House in New York City, and The EMDRIA Conference in Arlington, VA. When she is not enjoying her work, she loves music, hiking, and spending time with her family and dear friends.
