Thirty-five years after the restoration of Latvia’s independence, academic and intellectual freedom remain important considerations in discussions about the development of research, the production of knowledge, and its role in society. How has the research environment in Europe, the Baltic states and in Latvia evolved? What factors shape researchers’ ability to carry out their work?
💭 We invite you to a discussion on academic and intellectual freedom in Latvia today. The event will open with a special address by Eszter Kováts, who will offer a broader European perspective on the current state of academic freedom and the challenges facing research across Europe.
The subsequent discussion will draw on themes explored in the book "Politics of Uncertainty: The United States, the Baltic Question, and the Collapse of the Soviet Union" by Una Bergmane, connecting them with current questions about the future of research, the opportunities it offers, and the meaning of freedom beyond the context of national independence.
