The Society of Solicitors in the Supreme Courts of Scotland are kindly hosting members of the Scottish Young Lawyers Association for this CPD event, taking place on Thursday 17th September at 6pm in the SSC Library.
The event will consist of one hour of CPD delivered by Heather Morrison. The aim of the talk is to provide practitioners with a useful guide to the procedural steps and administrative requirements of preparing an application to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, with reflections from the speaker following her involvement in the landmark case of Keir -v- His Majesty’s Advocate [2025] UKSC 38, which was considered by the Supreme Court in late 2024. The talk will cover the key stages, from establishing eligibility, seeking permission to appeal, and preparing and submitting an application in compliance with the Court’s filing requirements.
The talk will focus on how to navigate the application process effectively from the first step to the Appeal Hearing, while adhering to the Court’s Rules and avoiding administrative pitfalls, to ensure that the application is prepared fully and properly.
Heather Morrison, LLB (Hons), Dip LP, SSC has been with Paterson Bell Ltd since 2019, completing a traineeship there and qualifying as a solicitor in 2021. Heather specialises in criminal defence work, regularly appearing in Sheriff Courts across Scotland in both summary and solemn cases. She has a keen interest in criminal appeals and, throughout her career, has assisted fellow practitioners in navigating complex appeal procedures, as well as undertaking appeal work in her own right.
Heather also serves on the Council of the Society of Solicitors in the Supreme Courts of Scotland.
The talk will be followed by networking with refreshments kindly provided by the SSC.
