This illustrated program looks at lessons learned since the spotted lanternfly was first discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014, what science is still working to understand, and what Worcester residents can realistically do as the insect becomes established here. The emphasis is on practical management not eradication.
Joe Johnson is a Worcester resident and a commissioner on the city’s Urban Forestry Tree Commission. He volunteers with the Blackstone Heritage Corridor and several local conservation and park stewardship organizations. With training in arboriculture, invasive plant management, and pollinator stewardship, Joe helps residents understand invasive species through fieldwork, public presentations, and community education. His spotted lanternfly program emphasizes lessons learned in other states and realistic approaches to managing this widespread insect.
