On this tour, Luke Tan ’28 will explore human efforts to control and own aspects of the natural environment and the implications for how we value materials, relationships, and experiences. The stops on the tour are: Large, Broad-Shouldered Jar with Decoration of Fish and Aquatic Plants, from Ming dynasty China (Jiajing period, 1522–66); Edgar Degas’s painting Cotton Merchants in New Orleans (1873); and Franz Marc’s painting Grazing Horses IV (1911).
Spotlight Tours are designed and led by Harvard undergraduates from a range of academic disciplines. Each tour is focused on objects chosen by the student and provides visitors a unique, thematic view into the collections. Tours typically feature three works of art, embrace a conversational format, and last about 45 minutes. Open to the public, these tours start outside the museum shop on Saturdays and Sundays at 11am and 2pm.
