About this Event
Sport can shape our identity, routines, relationships, and sense of belonging. What happens when injury, aging, retirement, or unexpected events change our ability to participate?
Sport, Grief, and the Body conference explores the connections between sport and grief, recognizing that significant loss extends beyond bereavement. Leaving a sport, being benched, facing unmet expectations, or experiencing changes in physical ability can bring grief that is often overlooked or unsupported.
This hybrid conference aims to validate athletes experiences of grief and explore better ways to support them through transition and loss. We welcome academics, practitioners, coaches, athletes, and students.
Topics of interest include:
- Injury and changes in physical ability
- Aging out of sport and retirement
- Failure, unmet expectations, and benching
- COVID-19 and its impacts on sport
- Identity and intersectional experiences, including the impacts of colonialism, racism, ableism, misogyny, heterosexism, and transphobia
- Collective, social, and political dimensions of grief related to sport
