Spooky Streets: The Frightening Reality for Pedestrians

Jane’s Walk - One hour guided walking tour
Windsor-Essex Jane's Walk Fundraiser - $25/per person
Saturday, October 24 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Host: Nicolas Lamoureux (Atelier Lamoureux)

A city solely designed for cars makes spaces worse for everyone (even for cars). And when an engrained culture of automobile supremacy is mixed with decades of designing our urban environment and infrastructure around automobiles, it becomes difficult to imagine a world designed for humans as it once was. From the bizarre misunderstanding of ‘15-minute cities’ to a real lack of progress on ‘vision zero’ recommendations in this region, we are consistently fighting both public opinion and political will to make actual changes to make our roads safer and our communities stronger.

It is scary being a pedestrian in Windsor. A string of recent fatalities spread across 2025 to 2026 shows us that the fear is not misguided. Police have told pedestrians to cross at crosswalks or face possible jaywalking fines as a solution despite viable crosswalks sometimes being 100s or 1000s of feet apart. The victims have been blamed for “wearing dark clothes” as if this will solve dangerous speeds on the roads. This walk will take a loop around downtown Windsor discussing where we’ve gone wrong, what Jane Jacobs might say about this, and bring out discussion towards solutions that we can all take part in.
