About this Event
To celebrate the spooky season, we show two spooky movies in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Free popcorn will be served, and a discussion will follow each screening.
In The Snow Woman (Tokuzō Tanaka, 1968, 79 minutes) a young apprentice is spared by a deadly snow spirit, provided he promises never to speak of their encounter. Years later, his vow is put to the test when he begins a relationship with a mysterious, beautiful woman named Yuki.
The story of Yuki-Onna, the Snow Woman, who kills any man who sets his eyes on her, is a Japanese folktale dating back to the 1300's, but is best-known to western audiences as one of the segments in Masaki Kobayashi’s 1965 classic Kwaiden. Made just three years later, Tokuzô Tanaka’s poetic and haunting feature-length interpretation adheres to the basic outline of the folklore, infusing it with added emotional depth and political subtext. Shot entirely on a studio set, the lighting and effects are dazzling for any era, this is an unsung classic of Japanese cinema.
The film is in Japanese with English subtitles. Watch the trailer here.
