Understanding the Rules... Breaking Them on Purpose.
Most of us first learn Modern Jive in a slot. It gives us somewhere to start, somewhere to finish, and that reassuring feeling that we've got it right. As beginners, that little bit of structure gives us confidence—and, if we're honest, even experienced dancers still rely on it more than they probably realise! Once that foundation is in place, that's when the fun really begins.
With Dee, we’ll explore how to confidently move on and off the slot, creating new pathways while keeping your dancing smooth, connected and effortless.
For leaders, it's about replacing hope with intention—learning how to guide your partner exactly where you want them to be.
For followers, it's about recognising the clues, trusting the lead and discovering that you don't have to guess where you're going—you simply respond to the information you're given.
Expect plenty of practical dancing, useful technique and some fun move combinations that bring these ideas to life. This isn't about learning lots of flashy patterns; it's about understanding why they work, so they become easier, clearer and far more enjoyable to dance.
Once you understand the rules, you'll have the confidence to bend them. Think of the slot as 'home'. Once you know where home is, you're free to explore... because you can always find your way back.
About Dee Lanning:
With over 20 years of teaching experience, Dee Lanning is known for her warm, engaging teaching style and her ability to make even the trickiest concepts feel approachable. Having enjoyed success in competition in recent years, including multiple Open-level titles, she brings a wealth of experience to every workshop—but it's the social dance floor where her real passion lies.
One of the few teachers equally at home leading and following, Dee offers a unique perspective on partnership, communication and connection, helping dancers understand both sides of every movement.
Her workshops focus on far more than learning moves. Dee believes that confidence doesn't come from knowing more moves—it comes from understanding why they work. Whether she's exploring musicality, technique or movement, at the heart of every workshop is one simple goal: to help people become confident dancers.
