A) Filming the Spotted Handfish sequence for Our Oceans, the unique specialised
equipment used and challenges we were confronted with.
B) The making of A Dragon Story. How I filmed the Leafy Sea Dragons behaviours
and captured a newborn Leafy Sea Dragon seconds after birth. How the story
came together, the challenges along the way and the mysteries that remain.
For my talk I will have some tools of the trade on show including my 8k Red V Raptor
Nauticam Underwater Cinema system, as well as a custom-made fluid head quad used
for filming small benthic subjects like the Handfish.
Bio -
Dean Spraakman is a local Adelaide based freelance Underwater Cinematographer
specialising in Natural History and Documentaries. Dean has worked on many shows
such as:
• Our Oceans for Netflix working on the Southern Ocean Episode specifically
filming the Spotted Handfish sequence in Tasmania.
• Shark Week and Shark Fest Shows including – Bull Shark Bandits for Nat Geo,
Mega Sharks of Dangerous Reef for the Discovery Channel & Super Shark
Highway for Love Nature.
• My Underwater Worlds for Channel 9 with Richard Harris
• All The Sharks 6-episode series for Netflix
• And more recently my own independent film ‘A Dragon Story’ has been
successful in several Film Festivals including The Ocean Film Festival

DiveDB - An Open Source Scuba Diving Website
DiveDB is a free online resource for Scuba Divers in SA. With over 1000 sites listed, and 1500 recorded dives it continues to grow. I talk about some of the newer experimental features of DiveDB (deco planner & meteye map overlay) and some of the future plans for it.
Bio -
Peter is an avid local diver and software developer by trade. When he's not staring at a laptop screen, he is staring at the viewfinder in his underwater camera. Recently he has caught the cave bug, having completed his CDAA Advanced Cave, and has started dreaming about trips to the Nullarbor.
