About this Event
An important part of London’s 2000-year history and present-day cosmopolitan culture is the contribution made by waves of immigrants from around the world. This walking tour starts in the ancient City of London, and takes us through the adjacent Spitalfields and Brick Lane neighbourhoods, where various immigrant communities over the centuries have found refuge and work - including French Protestant silk weavers, Russian Jewish tailors, and Bangladeshi Muslim restauranteurs.
In particular, we will learn about the large Jewish community from Eastern Europe that thrived in the East End of London until the mid- 20th century. During the walking tour we will see important synagogues and other sites of historic and cultural significance, whilst your guide describes 1000 years of Jewish history in Britain.
Embark on a journey through time as we stroll along streets and alleys where Yiddish was once the common language. Learn about the vibrant Spitalfields Jewish community of the past - whilst enjoying the sights and sounds of today’s multi-cultural East End.
