🌾 Spirits of the Harvest 🌾Corn Dolly Witchcrafting with Laurie of Ashes to Ashes Pop Up Shop
October 24 • 1–2:30 PM
$25 per person • All materials included
As harvest season winds down and Samhain draws near, gather with Open Circle for an afternoon of witchcrafting, remembrance, and seasonal magic. Laurie will guide us in making our own corn dollies while exploring the history and meaning woven into this harvest tradition.
🌾 The Spirit of the Harvest
Corn dollies belong to European harvest customs, including traditions found in Celtic regions. Traditionally made from the last stalks of harvested grain, they could take the form of figures or decorative woven shapes. In this tradition, “corn” refers to grains such as wheat, barley, or oats.
In harvest folklore, the final sheaf held the spirit of the grain. Making a corn dolly offered that spirit a home through winter, carrying the promise of renewed growth into spring. Some dollies were kept through the colder months and returned to the earth when planting began again—a symbol of gratitude, continuity, and hope for the next harvest.
🕯️ A Weaving of Remembrance
With its roots in Gaelic tradition, Samhain marks the passage from harvest into winter. For our gathering, we’ll connect the corn dolly’s harvest symbolism with remembrance, honoring our ancestors and loved ones who have passed.
You’re welcome to dedicate your dolly to someone you miss, weaving memories, gratitude, and love into your creation. Keep it on a remembrance altar or somewhere meaningful in your home as a reminder of what they have given you and what you carry forward.
🌿 Herbs & Intention
We’ll have herbs available to add to your dolly, including rosemary harvested for our gathering—a plant long associated with remembrance. Choose herbs to represent your own intentions, whether you’re honoring a loved one, expressing gratitude, inviting peace, or holding hope for the season ahead.
