Widely regarded as Canada’s first photojournalist, he chronicled everything from vibrant street scenes and civic festivities to visits by royalty. A true innovator, James built many of his own cameras, experimented with photographic chemistry, and became the first Canadian to capture aerial footage from a biplane.
Join Richard Fiennes-Clinton as he showcases selections from the thousands of images James created over his multi-decade career. Richard will also explore how James brought his work to the public, displaying hand-tinted slides on his "magic lantern", a projector that used kerosene for the power of illumination.
Richard Fiennes-Clinton is a Toronto-based historian and author. As owner of Muddy York Walking Tours, he has entertained and educated Torontonians and visitors alike with tales of the people and places that defined Toronto. Richard is also a frequent speaker at historical societies and public events, sharing stories that bring the city’s heritage to life. In 2015, Richard released his first book, Muddy York: A History of Toronto Until 1834.
