Graeme StanleyAdelaide Supernovas
Abstract: Constellations like Orion, Scorpius, and the Southern Cross are familiar and seemingly eternal, etched permanently into our night sky. In reality, their shapes exist only from our unique viewpoint on Earth, a chance alignment within the vast depths of space. Using 3D visualisations, we will leave Earth behind us and travel out towards the stars. As we move through space, the night sky transforms from a flat map above our heads into a vast cosmic structure surrounding us on all sides. The constellations we know, and love begin to twist and unravel. From these new perspectives, familiar patterns become strange and distorted, revealing just how deep space really is.
Bio: Bio: Graeme graduated from Edinburgh University in 1998 with a degree in Artificial Intelligence and Linguistics. In 2005, Graeme moved to Murthly, a rural village in Perthshire. Living more than a kilometre from street-lights gave him greater access to dark skies which ignited his interest in back yard astronomy and astrophotography. In 2012, Graeme moved to Adelaide with his wife and young son. He fell in love with the southern sky, graduated from the 10-week course ‘The Night Sky’, and as a result became a member of the Supernovas soon after arriving. Graeme works in the software development industry as a business analyst and likes to play with 3D graphics, full dome projection and video editing in his spare time.
