After 45 years of practicing and teaching 5Rhythms as a moving meditation—using movement as a way of uncovering and discovering myself—I’ve arrived at a crossroads.
Who am I in the movement world? What did I learn and receive from Gabrielle Roth?
Looking back to 1981, when I first began practicing what would eventually be called 5Rhythms, I ask myself:
What has made the biggest difference in my practice, consistently, over all these years?
Three things stand out.
1. 𝗪𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆
I became increasingly aware of my body from the feet upward: my feet, my center, my spine, my heart, and my breathing.
This awareness developed in a particular order—beginning with the feet and gradually moving inward and upward toward the center of my being.
𝟮. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲
I began to sense the space within my body—the inner space that connects these essential structures and energies.
Rather than simply being aware of individual body parts, I became interested in the space between and within them: the internal landscape through which movement, breath, sensation, and energy flow.
𝟯. 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲
After a recent conversation with a longtime 5Rhythms teacher, we agreed that perhaps the greatest takeaway from Gabrielle Roth’s work is space.
How do we move into space?
How do we perceive space?
How do we allow space to move us?
This opens into an exploration of different planes of movement—sensing how energy flows both around us and within us.
How do I expand into the space around me? How do I contract? How does my breathing change the quality and volume of my inner space?
Through awareness of the diaphragms, breath becomes a way of expanding and contracting this inner space, creating a dynamic relationship between the inside and the outside.
Come and explore space and shape—and discover how they can transform your perception of the dynamic practice of 5Rhythms.
We’ll explore moving alone, moving with a partner, and moving within a group.
Together, we’ll enter the space between body, breath, movement, sensation, and perception—and see what becomes possible when we allow space itself to become part of the practice.
