For two hundred years, South Jersey baskets did the region's hard work. They carried strawberries to the train, hauled charcoal out of the Pines, and lifted the day's catch from the bay.On Sunday, November 15 at 3 PM, Mary May tells that story at Richwood Academy, alongside an exhibit of locally made baskets from the Society's collection and a private collection. She works in white oak the way Pinelands makers did, and she studies surviving baskets to recover techniques that had nearly disappeared. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts named her a Heritage Fellow in the first class of that award.
Earlier that day, she teaches. At 11:30 AM, twelve people sit down at the bench and build a traditional South Jersey berry basket start to finish. All materials supplied. $60, and there are twelve seats.
Registration link in the comments. If the workshop fills, come at 3 for the lecture and the baskets.
