Hello Herb Enthusiasts:The speaker for our November 12 meeting will be Richard (Rick) Thomas, Ph.D., when he will introduce us to the rich heritage of herbs in holistic medicine in South America. Starting from a general view on South American herbs, Dr. Thomas will focus on medicinal herbs found in the Amazonian region with an emphasis on Peruvian herbs.
The presentation will provide a context for the role of herbs as interwoven in the Amazonian and Peruvian cultures. Background will be provided on the importance of holistic medicine in the area in view of the lack of formal healthcare.
The uses for common herbs will be discussed with examples provided of herbs endemic to the region. The traditional role of medicinal herbs in Peruvian society will be described and ways in which we might access South American herbs in the U.S. and use those herbs will also be discussed.
About our speaker:
Rick is a long-time member of the Memphis Herb Society and serves on the Society board, the planning committee, and the hospitality committee. He also coordinates the organization’s annual Herban Renewal grant program.
