About this Event
Sound on Sound KC's singer also whistles. Kelley Gant grew up in Maize, Kansas, and picked it up from her grandfather, and organist Everette DeVan encouraged her to try it on a gig. At the Masters of Musical Whistling International Festival and Competition in Los Angeles, she whistled Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite" and placed third in two categories.
Chris Lewis leads the band from the piano. Its videos cover Pat Metheny's "It's Just Talk," Jobim's "Triste," and Gretchen Parlato's "Better Than," and Spirits High includes Keith Jarrett's "Questar."
On flute is Jazzy Jazz Miyagi, who was born in Okinawa, studied at the New England Conservatory on full scholarship and later at Berklee, and was a soloist at the Kauffman Center's grand opening. Jeff Shirley plays guitar. JAM Magazine readers nominated him among Kansas City's top four jazz guitarists in 2021 and 2023, and on his 2022 album, Blue Gold, he played electric and acoustic guitar, fretless bass, sitar, and lap steel himself.
Taygun Ozakinci, on bass, has played Kansas City jazz since 2013 and directs the orchestras for the Spring Hill school district. Andrew Wray, the band's drummer, is on Shirley's May 2026 single, "Periharp."
